American Gothic

7 December 2025

In my last Blog, writing to my mailing list, the theme American Gothic struck a chord. Anita contacted me and said her and her husband Barry were photographed to be a poster couple for the Senior Newsletter which I was complaining about. By co incidence she had also posed to imitate the American Gothic theme around that time. This was made many years ago and because of the article she sent me the photo. I said “Wow” wouldn’t this be fun to get couples or randoms to pose for me and make a gallery. So here is the beginning of hopefully many more photos to come. Please send me any photos taken with your mobile. I think the background should be relevant to your work , hobby or just something you are fond of.

Travel Portraits 4

December 2025

Myanmar is probably my favourite of all the Asian countries to visit. It represents Asia of the past and the people are lovely. Their kindness and hospitality is genuine.

Its a shame the country is racked by war and corruption as the people deserve better.

The first portrait of the 5 girls is my favourite and reflects how lovely the people are. They were from a nearby village and were dressed up for a weekend outing visiting the viewspots of Bagan. Naturally being a helpful photographer in front of 5 beautiful women I offered my services. I even got one of the girls E mail and sent them the final image which they liked very much.

Travel Portraits 3

July 2025

These images were taken in Yunnan province China January 2015.

The Portrait of the construction worker is my favourite. It is not often you have a background like in a photostudio with a white sheet behind your subject. This image reflects the harshness of his work and his stoic adaptation to the job. The style of the image replicates one of my favourite artists Michael Ponder.

Photography gear talk

Its amazing what images I can get from the Nikon D3S as it only has a sensor of 12 MP. After I took the shots I regretted not changing to my D750 which would give me more information on cropping as it has a 24MP sensor. However being a lighter camera and not as well balanced with the 200mm zoom I might have ruined the shot with camera shake. Also all this was taken in less than 5 minutes as the bus was leaving after lunch. So the best camera you have is the one in your hand. Also all the lens tests talk about maximum resolution and sharpness. This obviously is very important, but I feel we do not place enough emphasis on the coatings and flare control. If I used a lens with less multicoatings, the details on the mans face would be washed out with glare. You can boast about the vintage lenses and they may be sharp but can they handle strong backlight?
